Au Revoir

This will be my last post, and so I wanted to say goodbye to all of you and thank you so much for reading and sharing your thoughts in the comments section.  You have entertained me, provoked me, at times challenged me, made me think furiously, smile, laugh, cry, even scream. One thing is certain: I have never been bored.

Getting to know all of you has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.  In some odd way, I have come to think of a few of you almost as family and many of you as friends. The Internet is strange that way – it connects people and things far distant in time and space almost effortlessly. I hope that it will allow me to see you again from time to time in the future.

But I cannot continue here.  I never meant to become a blogger; I agreed to do a few guest posts while joatmoaf was sick.  But writing is addictive and I got sucked into it.  And Jet Noise has never been my weblog; it belongs to joatmoaf.

He has certain standards which are quite reasonable, and he is fully within his rights to want them enforced. I have never had any quarrel with that.  I have twice now violated those standards, the first time simply without thinking and the second (yesterday) because I was rushed and tired and did not notice I had pasted in some text containing profanity.  This was careless of me and I regret the error. It was an error of omission, not of intent: I had taken the trouble that same morning to warn of profanity in two linked articles in another post. But it was entirely my responsibility to ensure that the content I used was free of profanity, and I failed to fulfill this responsibility. That is my fault.

Be that as it may, the Internet is a wild and woolly place, and I find that I have neither the time nor the energy to scan the reams of text I read daily looking for bad words or objectionable content.  Nor do I have the energy to constantly scan and edit the comments section when people slip up and swear.  This, frankly, is something I would probably do if I had my own blog.  It is by no means an unreasonable request.  And I want no misunderstandings: I am not angry, or feeling victimized, nor is there any bad feeling on my part.

I am simply unwilling to be accountable to someone else for something that, in the end, is not a standard I devised.  It takes all the joy out of what ought to be a labor of love.  This is not his fault, it is mine. My presence is pulling the blog in the wrong direction, I am unwilling to conform to his quite reasonable standards, and that is unfair to joatmoaf.

Thanks to everyone who linked to Jet Noise, or stopped by and read and commented.  I hope you'll continue to give joatmoaf your support as he takes the blog forward.  I truly wish him all the best, and thank him - and you - for giving me one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  I will never forget it.

And a special thanks to John Hawkins of Right Wing News for his support and encouragement. I couldn't have done this without you - thanks so much :D.

Because I'd like to end this on a high note, I have some excellent news: Robert Prather of Insults Unpunished has returned to blogging over at Signifying Nothing, so just as a load of hot air is removed from the Blogosphere, one of its finest voices returns to take the wheel.

Just another sign that God's in his Heaven and all's right with the world :)

This fu**ing sucks. That is all I have to say about that.

Good day.

Posted by: Pile On® at Nov 23, 2004 9:37:48 AM

We'll miss you Cass. You have always been inciteful and thought provoking. Thank you for your efforts the last 9 months or so.

Of course, now you'll have to slum in the comments section like the rest of us :-)

FWIW, I agree with Mr. On's sentiment, and he should know something about Orecks.

Posted by: Masked Menace at Nov 23, 2004 9:46:33 AM

You're welcome on my blog anytime. Profane or not.

Posted by: Chuck Simmins at Nov 23, 2004 10:10:49 AM

Well now, this bites! What can I say Cass? I am the most guilty party around here with my language but then I am of a rough sort. Nothing in my life has been comfortable or easy and I have all the edges I wish I didn't have. Funny thing is I know it but it doesn't help. I've spent too many years in rough enviroments and I guess I'm just too frggin' old and set in my ways now. Guess this is my apology and also a show of understanding. I have the mouth of a sailor/truck driver (oh, wait a minute - I AM those things!) and the mind of a Neanderthal. I stand guilty as charged!

If you decide to carry on with your own blog let me know and I'll continue to harangue you and make snide sexual innuendos there! ;-) I'll keep hanging out here too 'cause Joat needs a workout at deleting my insanity which you so carefully took care of in the past!

My-oh-my! what are you going to do with all that free time you'll have on your hands?! :-) I'll continue to harass you in e-mails though so you can't hide there! After all, we are family! ;-)

So this is not a goodbye, it is simply an "until we meet again"! You're way too insightful to not have an outlet for your thoughts. You will implode if you keep all that ranting to yourself. I have faith you'll be back or start anew! We will be the ones that suffer if you don't! :-(

Thanks Cass.
I'll see you in the funny papers.

Why do the talented women always quit blogging? Let me know if you need some help getting set up at a new location...

Posted by: John Hawkins at Nov 23, 2004 10:42:28 AM

Cass, if I had the time or know-how, I'd have you back up right now. I'm with Pile On. Or yous fellers. Or what ever.

I've been so busy these last two weeks, I haven't had time to fully participate, and now Cass is quitting? THIS BITES.

Posted by: KJ at Nov 23, 2004 10:47:10 AM

Cass, you can't go away yet. You owe me a major arse kicking on Scalia Unplugged.

Posted by: KJ at Nov 23, 2004 10:49:14 AM

The natives appear restless this morning.

Posted by: spd rdr, ntrnt xplrr at Nov 23, 2004 10:52:51 AM

Quit making me cry, you big jerks :)

KJ, I will still kick your arse. Probably not 'till after lunch though. I can't think straight and you and spd are too smart for me even when I CAN think straight. Now I'm terrified.

Thanks Chuck :)

Menace, I would hang out anywhere with you guys.

Posted by: Cassandra at Nov 23, 2004 11:00:31 AM

Actually I think I was supposed to spank spd on the Scalia thing too - I was just too busy this weekend.

So many little details... you attorneys are a never-ending source of work.

Posted by: Cassandra at Nov 23, 2004 11:02:03 AM

I hope this is an attempt at humor, or just because you really do not have time to do posts (writing is a lot of work) rather than because of not screening obscenities on your part. The language here has been pretty mild and is usually self-enforced based on gentle peer pressure.

Posted by: Rodney Dill at Nov 23, 2004 11:07:55 AM

No Rodney, and it is not anything joatmoaf has done TO me. This is not his fault. He made it very plain to me that this was his desire for the blog when I came aboard and I respect his beliefs. There are many bloggers who have the same standard: Scott Ott is one, Greyhawk of the Mudville Gazette is another, both men I very much respect. There is nothing wrong with holding the line at a point you decide on.

I honor that.

This is a free decision I made on my own.

I seem to keep crossing the line into bad taste - it's something I did on ScrappleFace too, and I got censored for it many a time. I don't want to be a problem.

And it bugs me to do that.

I don't feel right with myself about it - this is not something laid on me from outside.

There is no reason he should have to compromise his beliefs because I am unwilling to conform to a standard he established before I came aboard. That's not right. I'm the problem, not him.

All I'm doing is removing the problem, and I'm saying that without any attempt to sound melodratic: it is simply logic.

Rules are rules. If you can't respect them, you should leave. That is all I am doing.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity I was given - I'm not being smarmy or insincere when I say that.

I don't want to abuse that gift.

Posted by: Cassandra at Nov 23, 2004 11:18:54 AM

So, what is the point? Cassandra can't help it that she has a sociopathic tendency to bad taste. I shouldn't suffer because of it. And it is all about me. And the children, of course.

Shouldn't private rules bend to the will of the people? I think society is better off with Cassandra here than out there ananomously spreading her dangerous philosophies. For society. NO, FOR THE CHILDREN, Cassandra should stay.

Posted by: KJ at Nov 23, 2004 11:29:31 AM

Oh, Cass!

Although life has grabbed me firmly by the throat so that I don't have time to post these days, I never miss a single thing you write. I will miss you more than you know.

To underscore that point, I will now censor myself. Horse-dookeys! Effluvium! Micturition!

Posted by: MathMom at Nov 23, 2004 11:31:31 AM

I have seen the Apocalypse...

KJ has made a "for the children" argument :)

People, my work is done here. I can die a happy woman.

Posted by: Cassandra at Nov 23, 2004 11:32:04 AM

For the record, we have not authorized that loon KJ to speak for us. Nonetheless, we hate to see Cassandra go. We liked reading her occassional naughty bits.

So much for Freedom of Speech! I told you this would happen if Bush were re-elected.

Posted by: Cassandra at Nov 23, 2004 12:17:52 PM

If this is truly your own personal decision, I will accept it.

I would sit on it for one more day, IMHO.

And that and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee.

I will hope you reconsider.

If not God bless.

Dang it (socially acceptable expletive inserted) turn off the mind control before you let your mind wander.

Posted by: Rodney Dill at Nov 23, 2004 1:11:19 PM

Cassandra is leaving?

I get it, spelling America with a 'k', are we?

Well, Cassandra's destiny is in blogging, I tell you. Destiny's powerful hand has made the bed of Cassandra's future and it's up to her to lie in it. She is destined to be a superhero blogger, to right wrongs and pound two-fisted justice into the hearts of evil-doers everywhere. You don't fight destiny, no sir! And you don't eat crackers in the bed of your future or you get all...scratchy.

This computer thingy, who knew. It just goes to show you, the human mind is a dangerous plaything, boys. When it's used for evil, watch out! But when it's used for good, like Cassandra here, then things are much nicer.

We can never forget that science is a two-headed beast. One head is nice, it gives us aspirin and Cassandra's wise blogging and other modern conveniences,...but the other head of science is bad! Oh beware the other head of science!

Cassandra is mighty! She has a glow you cannot see. She has a heart as big as the moon, as warm as bathwater. She, and I, we're superheroes, man! We don't have time to be charming! The boots of evil were made for walking. We're watching the big picture, friend. We know the score. We are a public service, not glamour boys (and girls)! Not captains of industry! Not makers of things! Keep your vulgar moneys. We are a justice sandwich, no toppings necessary! Chat rooms of America, do you catch my drift? Do you...dig?

Well, I hope you boys have learned your lesson. In love, for example, there's a right way and a wrong way to do things. The right way is to take someone to a movie. The wrong way is to take someone from a movie. Because kidnapping is just plain wrong! Not only that, it's wrong in the eyes of the law.

In blogging, the right way is Cassandra's way. I don't know the meaning of the word surrender! I mean, I know it, I'm not dumb...just not in this context. And I hope Cassandra doesn't either.

Posted by: The Tick at Nov 23, 2004 1:22:49 PM

Wha...? Huh? You're GIVING UP?
Wait, what is this, the Spanish Inquisition?

Ya can't just leave!!!

Shane! Come back Shane! Come back!

Oh...what will become of us?
Alright, back to your lives, citizens.

Posted by: Don Brouhaha at Nov 23, 2004 1:49:51 PM

This is very sad news to me. I have greatly enjoyed Cassandra's wisdom, wit and sincerity. Cassandra, if you ever need a ride, just call. My in dash satelite speaker phone has world wide reception. My MP-3 player will blare blues all day over the Bose speakers in light of this news.

I hope you reconsider. If not, you have my gratitude and admiration.

Posted by: Hummer at Nov 23, 2004 1:52:53 PM

Purple, thank you. My decision is final. I wouldn't kid around with you all - this is too important to me. Your friendship is too important to me.

Mr. Tick, you are just as funny on the Internet as you are on TV. Maybe funnier. How can I get any work done if you insist on cracking me up?
