Bush or Kerry: Kinda Scary...

Jack had this interesting little personality test (along with a lot of other interesting posts) over at TigerHawk.

I thought, "If I come out testing like Kerry, I'll have to kill myself..." Since I'm still alive, you can infer that I wasn't too displeased with the results. I saved them somewhere - should be interesting to see how different people rated Bush and Kerry. Check it out.

One of the objectives of this research is to learn more about the relationship between people's personalities and the (perceived) personalities of political candidates. Personality researchers often describe people's personalities with respect to five major personality dimensions: Extraversion (the extent to which a person is sociable, exudes positive energy, and is behaviorally active), Agreeableness (the extent to which a person is warm, friendly, and cooperative toward others), Conscientious (the extent to which the person is dependable, prompt, and courteous), Emotional Stability (the extent to which the person is secure and free of anxiety), and Openness (the extent of a person's creativeness and willingness to explore new ideas).

Here are your scores on each of these five psychological variables. The scores can range from 1 to 5.

Extraversion: 4.375
Agreeableness 4.375
Conscientious: 4.625
Emotional Stability: 4.375
Openness: 4.125

In this research we are interested also in how you view the personalities of politicians. Here are the overall scores you provided for each candidate.

Trait Bush Kerry
Extraversion 4.5 3.125
Agreeableness 4.375 1.125
Conscientious 4.75 1.5
Emotional Stability 4.375 1.125
Openness 4.125 2.75

Our primary interest, however, is understanding whether people are more likely to endorse candidates who they see as being similar to themselves. (Or, conversely, whether people see as themselves as they see the candidates whom they endorse.) To answer this question, we have computed the overall similarity between the ratings you provided for yourself and the ratings you provided for both Bush and Kerry.

Candidate Dissimilarity score
Bush 0.05
Kerry 2.45

Higher numbers indicate greater dissimilarity. According to these computations, you viewed your own personality as being more similar to that of George W. Bush. Interestingly, you also endorse Bush over Kerry.
